Spring Planting Day – Finally

Posted by olemike on 04/18/2011

Leona and I got a lot done in the garden today (04/17/11).  We planted in four of our raised beds.  The weather was virtually perfect today for working outside.  We have been waiting for this for a couple of weeks.  However, the weather man is predicting rain showers and cooler weather over the next few days.

Bed #5

  • 1 – Pumpkin (Big Max)
  • 1 – zucchini Squash
  • 1 – Yellow Crookneck Squash
  • 1 – Sunburst Squash
  • 2 – Burpless Cucumber (added a trellis for vertical growing)

Bed #4

  • Swiss Chard (Bright Lights)
  • Spinach (Melody Hybrid
  • Lettuce (Gourmet Blend)
  • Lettuce (Vivian – Huge Romaine Type)

Bed #3

  • Parsnips (Hollow Crown)
  • Beets (Scarlet Prince)
  • Carrot (Garden King Hybrid)
  • Radish (French Blush)

Bed #2 (This bed was actually planted on 04/08/11)

  • 3 – Celebrity Tomato Plants – Determinate for canning Stewed Tomatoes
  • 2 – Beefsteak Tomatoes
  • 1 – Red Cherry

Bed #1  (The beans were inoculated with Seed Inoculant purchased from Harris Seeds in Rochester, NY.

  • Dragon Tongue Yellow Snap Beans
  • Garden Beans – Bush Blue Lake 274
  • Soybean – Be Sweet 292
  • Pole Snap Beans – Blue Lake, White Seeded Pole Beans

The seeds were all “Burpee” seeds purchased at Capital Nursery.  The sets (Bed #5) were purchased at Green Acres Nursery In beds #1, #3 and #4, we only planted about 1/2 of each bed.  We will plant another rotation in about two weeks.

Ya’ll come for dinner in about 60 days.. We’ll have lots of veggies!
